How To Make Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Today I will show you how to make a Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner.  Yesterday, my future daughter-in-law, Lish told me that since her girls clean the toilet in their bathroom, it sometimes smells.  They are 4 and 5, so she does not let me use chemicals, but what they are using is not strong enough for them to get it really clean and clean smelling.  I told her there was an easy solution.  I  would make a natural toilet bowl cleaner, at that would not be dangerous for the girls to use, and it would still get the bathroom clean and clean smelling.

I have in the past written about uses for a variety of normal household items such as hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and rubbing alcohol.  These are all great ingredients for a toilet bowl, but I wanted to make sure this was a super kid friendly recipe.  I realized as I was writing I have been remiss about writing a post for all of the uses for vinegar, which I think is an amazing cleaning product.  I guess that will be for next week.

These are the ingredients that I wanted to use for my Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner and the reasons for using them:

Vinegar - this is a great all around anti bacterial and when combined with either washing soda, baking soda, or borax it becomes an amazing cleaning product.  It is also non toxic, so safe for the girls to use for cleaning their toilet.  This is an acid.

Washing Soda - is alkalline and is great for cleaning.  We use it in our washing machine all of the time.  I was hoping to be able to make something that the girls would just be able to spray in the toilet, but the washing soda will have to be sprinkled into the toilet after they have sprayed the vinegar solution.  This will also help with scrubbing the stains around the toilet.  If I were making this for myself I would use borax, but since I am making this for two little girls to use, I want to make sure that it is super safe.

Tea Tree Oil - This is a great essential oil.  It comes from the leaves of the melalueca plant.  It has antibacterial and antifungal properties.  It is not harmful for the two girls to use, so I will definitely add this to the cleaner.

Lemon Essential Oil - This is another essential oil that has antibacterial properties.  So it will not only help clean and sanitize, but it will also help make the bathroom smell nice.

Now before we start, excuse my toilet.  It really dirty.  I know it is hard to tell from pictures what has been put inside the toilet, but it does work well.  You can at least tell that it is clean at the end.

Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner
(it can also be used all over the toilet)

Ingredients:

1 1/4 cup white vinegar
1 cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
1 tsp tea tree essential oil
1 tsp lemon essential oil
1 squirt bottle or spray bottle
1 jar with holes in the top

Directions:

Put vinegar and essential oils into a spray bottle or squirt bottle.

Put the washing soda into a container with holes, to that they can sprinkle it over the vinegar mixture.

How to Use:

Shake the vinegar solution well before using.  The vinegar solution should be sprayed or squirted in the toilet bowl and can either be sprayed or wiped all around the toilet, toilet seat, toilet tank, and on the floor around the toilet.

Sprinkle the washing soda inside the toilet.

The girls can then use the toilet brush to scrub the inside of the toilet.

They can then just wipe around the toilet, toilet seat, toilet tank, and floor to finish cleaning the toilet with a rag or cloth with gloves on.

This is a great way to get your kids, even the little ones helping around the house.  It gives them something that they can do that is fun, and they can feel a sense of accomplishment.

It's also great because you are not using chemicals in the house.

Have a great week and I always love hearing from you.

How to Make Dawn Laundry Detergent

Today we will learn how to make Dawn Laundry Detergent.

Here is the scene.  It is the day before Easter, and I'm trying to pack our clothes for a trip to Mexico. I'm leaving on Monday morning and don't want to have to do my laundry on Easter.  I'm all out of laundry detergent, and the normal one I make has to sit for 8 hours.  That wont work since I need to do the laundry now!  I of course hop onto Pinterest to find ideas for fast and easy laundry detergents and this was a great idea that I found.  I was so excited that it was easy and it only ended up taking me about 10 minutes to make.

I waited to post the recipe, because I wanted to make sure that it worked well and cleaned all of our clothes and other household stuff (sheets, towels, quilts).  It really does a great job, and is great when you need it quickly.  I still like the other one a little better, because it's a little more natural, but I would recommend this in a pinch.

Dawn Laundry Detergent

Ingredients:

5 TB Borax
5 TB Arm and Hammer Washing Soda
3 TB Dawn dishwashing liquid (I used blue)
2 cups hot water
1 gallon container
cold water to fill container

Directions:

Put borax, washing soda into your jug.

Add the 2 cups of hot water to the jug and shake for a few minutes until the powders have dissolved.

Next fill the container with cold water, it will foam from the soap, but just keep filling and let the foam run over the top of the jug.  Just make sure you leave a little room for the Dawn.

You will then at the Dawn Liquid dish soap, and shake and you are set to go.

I use 1/4 cup liquid in my HE3 machine and it works great.  This is a really quick solution if you need laundry detergent immediately.

Let me know what you think.
Have a great week.

How To Make Tangerine Foaming Hand Soap

Today I will be showing you how to make Tangerine Foaming Hand Soap.  It is a really simple to make and much less expensive then buying liquid soap at the store.  I ran out of my Dial Foaming Hand Soap yesterday morning and decided that I should just make some rather then buy it.  I had everything on hand, and since one of my favorite essential oils is Tangerine, I decided to make it smell like Tangerines.  I also re-used my Dial Foaming Hand Soap Container to make it foam.

Tangerine Foaming Hand Soap

Ingredients:

2 oz Dr Bonner's Unscented Baby Mild Liquid Castille Soap
5 oz distilled water
1/4 oz jojoba oil
40 drops tangerine essential oil
1 foaming hand soap container (I used the old one from my Dial Foaming Hand Soap)

Directions:

Put the distilled water in your container first.

Next add the Dr. Bonner's Liquid Castille Soap.

Then add the jojoba oil and your tangerine essential oil.

Put the pump back on your container and shake.

You are ready to go.  It smells wonderful, and is great for in the kitchen.

Here are the reasons that I have used certain ingredients.

1.  Distilled water - I use this because is has less impurities, that could make your ingredients go bad.

2.  Dr. Bonner's Baby Mild Liquid Castille Soap - This is a good all purpose liquid soap that many things can be made from.  It is concentrated so it must be diluted with the distilled water.

3.  Jojoba Oil - I used a little of this because my hands are in water all of the time and the oil makes it less drying.  You could also use olive oil or almond oil if you don't have jojoba on hand.  (I wouldn't use coconut oil because it more of a solid oil then a liquid oil)

4.  Tangerine Essentail Oil -  I love the smell of Tangerines and this is divine.  It is also an antibacterial which is great for hand washing.  You could also use Lemon, which would smell great also.

I always love hearing from you.  What is your favorite scented hand wash?  I hope you like this Foaming Hand Soap as much as I do.

Have a great week.

How to Make Beachy Coconut Room Freshener

I love making my own chemical free household products, and this Beachy Coconut Room Freshener fits the bill.  I love the smell of the beach and for some reason the smell of coconut always reminds me of the beach.  I was remembering the smell of a Tanning Oil that I made, and wanted something that smelled like that for my home.  I thought that I had posted that recipe, and found that I hadn't.  I made it before I was blogging, so I am going to have to make it again and share it with all of you.  This scented room spray is another super easy product to make.

Beachy Coconut Room Freshener

Supplies:

3/4 of a 1/8 oz bottle Kuumba Made Black Coconut Fragrance oil
3 oz distilled water
2 oz White Vinegar
Spray bottle

Directions:

Mix all of the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake and go for it.

It's ready to use. The oil will separate in between uses, but just shake the bottle before you spray each time.

10 Uses for Hydrogen Peroxide

Today I have found 10 Uses for Hydrogen Peroxide.   Like last weeks post 10 Uses for Rubbing Alcohol, I wanted to investigate what else Hydrogen Peroxide could be used for, and I was surprised.  This is also a very versatile product.  I also like that it is so inexpensive, which makes it an inexpensive alternative to the more expensive products that you find in the stores.

10 Uses for Hydrogen Peroxide

1.  Fruit and Vegetable Cleaner

I love this one.  I always buy the antibacterial drops to soak my fruit and vegis in when I am in Mexico.  I no longer need to do this.  Use 1/4 cup peroxide in a large bowl of water and put you fruit and vegetables in the bowl.  Soak for 15 to 20 minutes.  Your food is now clean and sanitized.

2.  Clean Your Toothbrush

I really like this idea.  I never thought of it.  Pour peroxide in a glass, deep enough to cover the head of your toothbrush.  Put your toothbrush into the glass, head down and soak for 10 to 15 minutes, once a week.  You must  do this with freshly poured peroxide, because it becomes inactive when exposed to light.   This should take care of any bacteria or viruses on your toothbrush.  This is especially good to do after you have been sick.  That way you are not reinfecting yourself.

3.  Cleaning Your Cutting Board

I love this idea.  I never feel like I get my cutting board clean enough.  I also really dislike using bleach, which is what I have been using to clean my cutting board.  Wash your cutting board as usual, dry, then pour peroxide over the cutting board to make sure any additional bacteria is cleaned off.  You can let it sit for a few minutes to make sure it is really clean.  I especially love it when I see the peroxide bubbling, because I know it's working.

4.  Cleaning Kitchen and Bathroom Counters

This is another way to sanitize your counters.  I think the easiest way to use this is just screw a sprayer onto your peroxide bottle and spray your counters with the peroxide, and then wipe off with a clean cloth.  You could also put the peroxide on a clean cloth and wipe everything down.  This is another great and easy way to clean and sanitize your counters.

5.  Alternative to Oxyclean in Your Laundry

I use this all of the time.  I originally read it on the blog One Good Thing by Jillee.  I mix 1/4 cup washing soda,  1/4 cup peroxide, and 1/2 cup hot water and add it to my laundry as a pre soak to get my whites whiter.  I love it.  I also use this same mixture in the sink to soak whites for longer periods of time.  I fill the sink with hot water, and add the washing soda and peroxide mixture to it.  I then add my whites and soak for several hours.  Peroxide looses it's potency when exposed to light so you can not mix this up ahead of time, just mix it up for each use.  Also, you don't need to let things soak in the sink longer then a couple of hours, because it stops working.

6.  Cleaning Your Earrings and Backs

Put peroxide in a small bowl and add your earrings and their backs.  Use a soft clean toothbrush to gently clean any debris from the the earrings and backs, put back in the peroxide and soak for a few more minutes.  I love this because it will not only clean your earrings and their backs, but it also sterilizes them.  Great when your holes are infected.  If you have an infection, make sure that you dry the earring first with a clean dry cloth, before putting the earring back in your ear.  The reason for the is that peroxide can damage cells that need to heal you don't want to use it on those cells.  You could put the earring in alcohol prior to inserting the earring into your ear to help disinfect your ear.

7.  Lighten Blond Hair Naturally

You can mix a 50/50 solution of 3% peroxide and water and spray it on your hair after your shower.  Once sprayed in hair comb it through to evenly distribute it. It will gradually lighten your hair without the yellowing and the damage that store bought hair peroxides can cause.  I thought this was great.  I have read that you can use it on dirty blond and also light brown air without the problems that bleach causes also.  I would be very careful with trying it on light brown hair, but it may be worth a try.

7.  Cleaning Your Floors

Mix 1/2 cup peroxide with 1 gallon of water, mop as normal to sanitize your floors.  This is especially great for families with crawling babies.   I have not tried this on my wood floors, but I would certainly use this on tile or linoleum.  I use vinegar and water on my wood floors, here is the link to my Homemade floor cleaner.

8.  Cleaning Sponges

I love this idea.  Sponges are a great hiding place for bacteria, and this solution will take care of that.  Mix a 50/50 solution of 3% peroxide with water in a shallow bowl and put your sponge into the solution.  Make sure that the sponge is covered completely in the solution.  Soak for 10 minutes.  Then remove from solution, rinse, and let it dry completely before using again.

9.  Cleaning Mildew and Mold in Your Shower

Mix 1 part peroxide with 2 parts hot water and spray it on your shower tiles and grout.  It will sanitize and get rid of the mold and mildew in your shower.  Just rinse when done.

10.  Cleaning Mirrors

While you are cleaning your bathroom counters, you can also spray peroxide on your mirrors to clean them.  Spray it on and wipe off with a soft cloth or a paper towel.  It cleans and leaves a streak free shine.

I hope that this is helpful for all of you.  I thinks it's great that you can use a simple household product like peroxide to clean so many things in your house naturally.  I always love hearing from you.

Have a wonderful week.
