Chalcedony, Malayasian Jade, and Aventurine Necklace

I wanted to show you this set of jewelry that I made recently with Chalcedony, Malayasian Jade, and Aventurine.  I decided to use sterling silver wire for the necklace and bracelet, since I was using semi precious stones.  I used for 14 kt gold wire for the earrings, since my ears are allergic to silver.  I also used some silver beads for interest.  I chose the colors for this necklace, because they remind me of sea glass.  Several months ago I was at the bead store, and saw all of the beautiful aqua, green, and yellow colored stones, and thought they would make a great spring and summer collection of jewelry.  Living a block from beach, creates a feeling of calm, and I wanted to reflect this in my jewelry designs.

I really love wire wrapping, and it creates a strong base for these stones which are pretty heavy.  I didn't want anything breaking or coming apart, so wire wrapping is the perfect medium for these beautiful semi precious stones.  My favorite is the center piece, the briolette which is Chalcedony.  It reminds me of the ocean on a clear, perfect day.

I learned how to wire wrap Craftsy's Wire Wrapped Jewelry Making Class. I loved the class and the techniques are not difficult.

Turquoise Teardrop Earrings Tutorial

I love these Turquoise Teardrop Earrings that I made.  I learned how to make them in Craftsy's Wire Wrapped Jewelry Making Class.

They are pretty simple to make, and so cute.  I have been trying to figure out who to give them too.  I also bought some other teardrop crystals that would be really cute also.  So those will be in an upcoming tutorial.

Turquoise Teardrop Earrings Tutorial

Supplies:

2 teardrop Turquoise stones
3 feet 24 gauge silver wire divided in half (I used non tarnish silver plated wire
2 ear wires
needle nose pliers
flat nose pliers

Directions:

1.  String your teardrop stone onto your 24 gauge wire about 4 inches from the end.

2.  Using your finger and bend the wire towards the top of your stone at a 90 degree angle, towards the right top of the stone.  It will be flush with the stone.

3.  Next, bend the long part of the wire in the same way, but going to the left.  The wires will now look like an X at the top of the bead.  This wire will be behind the short end

4.  You will then bend the 4 inch piece of wire to a 45 degree angle from the top of the stone.  Bend the long piece of wire straight up.

5.  Using your finger on the 4 inch piece of wire, bend the wire around the top of the needle nose pliers and then turn the pliers and bend the wire towards the bottom of the pliers.  Next, bend the wire to the left.

6.  You will then start wrapping the wire around the two wires 3 to 4 times.  Cut the end piece.  you have now made the loop at the top of the stone to attach the ear wire to.

7.  next you will start wrapping the long wire over the part of the wire that you have already wrapped, but you will continue wrapping the wire around the stone, until you have gotten below where the wire comes out of the holes in the stone.  Make sure that you are keeping the wraps very close together.

8.  You will then bring the piece of wire along the back of the stone up to the bottom of the loop.  You will then wrap the wire around the bottom of the loop, and then wrap it several times around the top of the already wrapped wires.

9.  Then cut the extra piece of wire off.

10.  You will then need to use your pliers to open the bottom of the ear wire and slip the stone onto the ear wire and close the loop on the ear wire.  Repeat this process for the second ear ring.

How To Make Chain

Today I am sharing how to make a chain.  Sorry this is so late again today.  These last two posts have been a little longer then usual and a little more time consuming.  I hope at least you are enjoying them

I'm not sure what you would call these links, but they are pretty easy to make.  I also made the jump ring and the clasp, but that tutorial will be for another day.  I really like the way this chain came out, and you don't need a lot of supplies to make it.

I also used a silver plated wire.  You don't want to make this for the first time with sterling.  If you are like me, you will make mistakes in the beginning.

How To Make A Chain

Supplies:

20 gauge silver wire (I used Artistic Wire Silver Plated)

1 pair needle nose pliers

2 pairs flat nose pliers (you could also use one flat nose and one needle nose pliers)

1 pair flush wire cutters (so that you have flat ends)

chasing hammer (optional)

steel block (optional)

Directions:

1.  Start with a 5 in length of 20 gauge silver wire.

2.  I put the tip of my wire about 1/8 of an inch from the tip of the needle nose pliers, holding the pliers flat in my hand with my palm facing up.

3.  Wrap the wire towards the right of you pliers, and then up and over the top of pliers and to the left.

4.  Take the loop off of your pliers.  You now have your first loop.

5.  Now, you will put the loop on the top of the pliers facing the left of the pliers, holding your hand in the same way as you did in step 2.

6.  You will now repeat steps 3 and 4.

7.  When you take the wire off of your loop it will look like an 8.  

8.  You will snip the wire with the flush side facing the away from the center of the link.  This way the wire will be flat where it meets the center of the link.  (hint.  I always trim the wire just a tiny bit with the flush side to have flat ends.)

9.  You have made your first link.  You will need to make of total of 16 links.  This will be approximately 7 to 7 1/2 inches for a bracelet.

10.  From here you can do one of two things to your links.  You can either leave them and use them like this for your chain, or you can use your steel block and chasing hammer to flatten them.  

11.  I am pretty new to making jewelry, but I have heard that when you hammer the wire you harden the wire.  I am not sure if this is true, but I tried it on this bracelet.

12  Next you will need to assemble your chain.

13.  You will need to use either you two flat nose pliers, or use a needle nose and a flat nose pliers to open and close your links.

14.  Hold the link in your flat nose plier, and twist the link to the back, and then twist it back to the center of the link so that it touches the center of the link.  You may need to do this a second time until it is touching the center of the link.  NEVER PULL THE LINKS OUT, ONLY TWIST FRONT TO BACK.  PULLING OUT WILL CHANGE THE SHAPE OF THE LINK.

15.  You have closed one side of the link, you will need to repeat step 14 on the other side of the link.  This is your first closed link.

16.  You will repeat step 14 for one side of your next link.

17.  On the other side of your link you will need to twist it open and then insert into the first link.

18.  You will then repeat step 14 to close the link.

19.  Keep repeating steps 16 and 17 until you reach the desired length for your chain.

20.  You have now made your first chain.

Heart and Cameo Charm Bracelet

I actually made this Heart and Cameo Charm Bracelet for Charly's Mother-in-Laws birthday gift.   It was really fun to make, and I love the way it came out.  She liked it a lot also.  She was here at Thanksgiving and we got to spend some fun time with her and her husband.  I really enjoy giving gifts that I have made.  They are unique which makes them fun to give.

Supplies:

2 14 inch Art-i-Cake chains (of your choice

5 rhinestone hearts

3 Cameo Charms (Martha Stewart)

12 jump rings

1 toggle closure

2 flat nose pliers

Directions:

Separate both of your 14 inch chains in half, so that you have 4 7 inch chains.

Lay your chains out and lay your charms where you want to attach them.

Use your jump rings to attach the charms to the chains with two needle nose pliers.

Next you will slide a jump ring through a link at one end of each chain and close the jump ring with your flat nose pliers.

Repeat this with the other end of the chains.

Next attach the toggle and circle closure with to your jump rings with jump rings using your flat nose pliers.

I was having a problem with glare when taking these pictures.  The cameos are pale blue and white which you can see in the pictures above.
