DIY Dish Soap - Flop

My Flop

Now is the time to show one of my flops.  We all have them every once in a while.  Well this is certainly mine.

I have been making the Homemade Liquid Dish Soap - Frugally Sustainable, and it does work.  I would just prefer to make it a little thicker.

This is what I have been having a hard time with.  I have been using and tweaking this recipe for some time, and I thought I finally had it.  I dissolved 3 additional tablespoons of Dr Bonner's castille soap in this last batch.  It was finally thicker, but, and here is the big but, after it cooled it separated.  So now I have white soap floating in my dish soap.

Oh well,  I will keep trying to make a thicker dish soap, but in the meantime the Homemade Liquid Dish Soap from Frugally Sustainable is a really great recipe.

Tell me if you have the secret to making a thicker liquid dish soap.  I would love to hear your solutions to this problem.

  1. I haven't been able to find one that I like yet. I tried Frugally Sustainable's dish soap too, but it was way to runny and I had to use A TON in order to feel like everything was clean.

    I am still on the hunt to find something that I like as much as my Dawn!

    2. Here's my "recipe" based on Frugally Sustainable's original.

      3T shredded Ivory soap
      1(generous)T washing soda
      1T vinegar
      1T glycerin
      enough boiling water to make about 4 cups

      Then stir. And stir. And stir some more. It usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half of stirring every couple minutes (I set it next to me on a table while I do my nightly "catch up" on all things internet)to get this liquid to gel, and once it really gels up, I use a whisk to break up the chunks a bit to help smooth it out and then add a few drops of lemon essential oil. I've been working on this one for a couple of months now, trying to get a formula with suds. I know, suds aren't necessary, but I like them. So as of now this is what I've been using. It's thick and feels nice and works. That's all we're looking for, right?

  2. I use Frugally Sustainable's recipe and add a whole bar of Ivory soap (shredded). Nice and thick and lots of suds. Good Luck!

  4. AWWWW, Debi! Is it making you crazy? I get crazy when I can't make a idea come together. Thanks so much for sharing and I will definitely be hoping over to try the recipe you shared! But if you do master your thicker version, please let me know because I would love to try it:)

    1. Yeah, it was making me a little crazy, but a lot of people have suggested some great ideas. I am going to try them sometime soon.
