Wire Ring Tutorial 2 Spiral Ring

Today I am doing a Wire Ring Tutorial 2 - Spiral Ring.  I have been having a lot of fun making rings  with silver wire, and it seems like the sky is the limit  Just use your imagination or head over to Pinterest to get ideas.  So far these are my own designs, but I was checking out Pinterest yesterday, and there are so many fun designs that you can make with very few special tools.  You can get silver wire and basic tools like needle nose pliers, wire cutters and a mandrel at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. On one blog I even saw someone using a chapstick tube instead of a mandrel.  I thought this was a great idea for someone starting out and not wanting to invest a lot of money.

Spiral Wire Ring Tutorial

Supplies:

Silver Wire 18 gauge (can be silver or any color, I used sterling silver but I also have some silver plated.)

wire cutters

needle nose pliers

Mandrel or chapstick container for sizing and shape
Emory board or metal file (you can use the one from your nail clippers even)

Directions:

1.  Cut a piece of silver wire about 2 1/2 inches long.

2.  Bend your wire around the back side of your mandrel to the size that you want your ring to be, leaving the two sides straight up over the top of the mandrel.

3.  Next twist the two parts of the wire in the opposite direction around each other using your needle nose pliers.

4.  Then start twisting the wire on the left in a spiral circle around the wire on the right.

5.  Before finishing wrapping your wire, take your file and file the end of the wire so that it is not so sharp

6.  Finish twisting the wire on the left all the way around, and make sure that the end of the wire is pushed in tight.

7.  Next, start wrapping the wire on the right to the left and wrapping in a spiral, on top of the first wire.

8.  Before that wire has been totally wrapped in your spiral, file the end of that wire also, so that it is not sharp.

9.  Push the edge of the wire in tight, so that it will not snag on your clothing.  You can do that with you needle nose pliers, by squeezing the top of the ring together.  (the end and the opposite side of the wire.)
